چکیده

This chapter is concerned with the dynamics of social norms. In particular the chapter concentrates on the lifecycle that social norms go through, focusing on the generation of norms, the way that norms spread and stabilize, and finally evolve. We also discuss the cognitive mechanisms behind norm compliance, the role of culture in norm dynamics, and the way that trust affects norm dynamics. 1998 ACM Subject Classification I.2.11 Intelligent agents, Multi-agent systems

Diversity-induced resonance in the response to social norms

In this paper we focus on diversity-induced resonance, which was recently found in bistable, excitable, and other physical systems. We study the appearance of this phenomenon in a purely economic model of cooperating and defecting agents. An agent's contribution to a public good is seen as a social norm, so defecting agents face a social pressure, which decreases if free riding becomes widespre...

Mutual Commitment, Norm Formation and Indirect Regulation of Agent Society

Norm formation is one of the most basic processes of social interaction. To clarify this process, we introduce mutual commitment and meta commitment among agents. R. Axelrod has analyzed the commitment structure of norm formation and the collapsing process of the norm as his norm and meta norm games [1] . He analyzes the games with genetic algorithm. In this paper we generalize the games as mut...

These are here defined as deliberative agents, representing norms and deciding upon them. Normative agents can use the norms to evaluate others' behaviours and, possibly, convince them to comply with norms. Normative agents contribute to ...
